In the run-up to the G20 Summit, Speakers of Parliament from the 20 leading economies of the world have committed to working together to address challenges such as the future of work, financing development, the fight against corruption, the empowerment of women and youth, education, and a renewed commitment to multilateralism.
The IPU and the National Congress of Argentina brought together the 20 Speakers of Parliament or their representatives, and other legislators, from 31 October to 2 November, a few weeks before the next summit of the G20 Heads of State. The meeting has been named the P20 because it convenes a Speakers’ Summit and a Parliamentary Forum in the context of the G20. At the meetings, MPs discussed key global issues, received first-hand information about G20 progress, and considered ways of supporting the implementation of G20 decisions.
In the outcome document, the P20 Speakers encouraged the G20 Heads of State and other leaders to actively pursue the objective of strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth, and to find solutions to the common challenges facing the global community. They reconfirmed that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and its accompanying Sustainable Development Goals, constitute the roadmap for a fair, equitable and sustainable development of the planet.
The Speakers committed to bringing the P20 conclusions to the attention of their respective Heads of State and other leaders, in advance of the G20 Summit, also taking place in Argentina at the end of November. The Speakers also committed to continuing to work together in 2019, including in the context of the G20 taking place in June in Japan.
The UK Parliament was represented at the Parliamentary Forum by BGIPU Chair, Nigel Evans MP, BGIPU Vice-Chair Baroness Hooper and Dr Lisa Cameron MP. Mr Evans and Baroness Hooper represented the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker respectively at the Speakers' Summit.
