12 Plus Group Statement on the situation in Myanmar at the 142nd IPU Assembly

On 24 May 2021, Arda Gerkens, President of the 12 Plus Group made  a statement during the IPU Governing Council on the situation in Myanmar on behalf of the 12 Plus Group:

“We stand with the United Nations Security Council and call for the immediate release of all detainees and an end to all repressive measures targeting the civilian population of Myanmar. We stress the need to uphold democratic institutions and processes and the full respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.”

This statement by the 12 Plus Group follows and is complementary to an initial statement by the IPU condemning the military coup in Myanmar and a subsequent statement noting the discussions between the IPOU President and Secretary genera and the deposed parliamentarians of Myanmar.  The IPU continues to follow developments in the country closely and invited Myanmar representatives to participate as observers in the 142nd Assembly of the IPU held virtually from 24-27 May 2021.
