Across 136 years, the IPU has travelled from Paris to Tashkent: Celebrating 150 IPU Assemblies!
On a warm summer’s day in 1889, a historic gathering took place in the heart of Paris, France. On 30 June, a group of parliamentarians from nine countries convened at the Hotel Continental for the very first Inter-Parliamentary Conference. Among the 94 delegates present were representatives from Belgium, Britain, Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Liberia, Spain, and the United States of America. This meeting marked the beginning of a journey that would see the IPU evolve into a global force for parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy.
As the IPU approaches its landmark 150th Assembly, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 5- 9 April, we look back at a few highlights from past Assemblies, celebrating the enduring spirit of collaboration between parliamentarians around the world and the global reach of the IPU.
