Armenia and Azerbaijan Speakers pursue parliamentary dialogue as pathway to lasting peace
The IPU hosted another round of high-level parliamentary talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan this week during the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.
On 21 October 2025, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong welcomed the Speaker of the Azgayin Zhoghov (National Assembly of Armenia), Mr. Alen Simonyan, and the Speaker of the Milli Mejlis (National Assembly of Azerbaijan), Ms. Sahiba Gafarova.
This is the third time the two Speakers have met in this format, following earlier bilateral meetings at IPU headquarters in Geneva in March and May 2024.
Both parliaments were also represented on the Preparatory Committee for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, as part of the Eurasia Group. The Committee was tasked with preparing for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which took place in July 2025 at the United Nations Office at Geneva.
These latest discussions reaffirm the central role of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing reconciliation and supporting the peace process between the two nations.
The IPU Secretary General congratulated the two Speakers for their political leadership and efforts towards reconciliation and long-term peace between the peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
This latest development in the normalization process follows the agreement reached in August 2025 between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Washington D.C., in talks hosted by US President Donald Trump.
Both Speakers reaffirmed their willingness to continue the constructive dialogue in pursuit of peace.
