BGIPU Charity “Pub Quiz”

As part of the BGIPU Week the Secretariat of the Group organised a charity “Pub Quiz” event in the Houses of Parliament for Members and staff on 12 September.

The event was organised in order to raise funds for two children’s charities which MPs and members of the team visited whilst in Uganda for the 126th IPU Assembly in March 2012.

The Quiz was hosted by Nigel Evans MP and turn out was excellent, with over 50 people taking part.

The first of these charities is an orphanage on the outskirts of Kampala, the Good Samaritan School, run by a man named Godfrey and his family which was set up by his father. The school helps orphans and children whose extended families who are unable to care for them by providing basic education and accommodation. The conditions in the school are very basic and overcrowded, with little in the way of supplies and materials.

The second of the charities in Retrak Uganda, a UK based charity, which helps street children in Kampala, offering medical care, sporting facilities and food. There are numerous reasons why children live and sleep on the streets such as poverty; family strife; abuse; being orphaned – the list goes on. Retrak aims to get these children off the street through fostering and education programmes.

The winners of thew quiz were “Quizteam Aguilera” made up of Caroline Dinenage MP, Sheryll Murray MP, Mark Lancaster MP, Graham Stuart MP, Andrew Bingham MP and Alice Perry.

We are pleased to say that the evening raised over £350 for these deserving charities which will be put towards providing equipment, clothing and educational materials.

The BGIPU Team would like to thank all of you who came along and hope that you enjoyed the evening.

We hope to have more events in the future – so please watch this space!
