BGIPU hosts at Westminster the Alliance “For a Democratic Belarus” meeting
On 4 June BGIPU hosted in the Attlee Suite of the UK Parliament a meeting of the Alliance of Parliamentary Groups “For a Democratic Belarus”. The meeting brought together representatives of 9 national parliaments, the European Parliament and PACE, as well as speakers from the Belarusian democratic forces (Office of the President-elect of Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the United Transitional Cabinet, the Coordination Council, political parties, experts, and diaspora organisations).
Key highlights from the day included sharing updates from parliamentary groups and reviewing achievements and problems from the past 7 months (since the last meeting in Paris in October). Anatol Liabedzka, Advisor to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on Constitutional Reform and Parliamentary Cooperation, presented the project of the Positive Alternative for a New Belarus – a vision of a free Belarus. Participants took part in 3 roundtable discussions on Belarus’ European integration; the draft Constitution of a new Belarus; justice and economic reforms.
In addition, Members of Parliament recorded short video messages to Belarusians and signed postcards for political prisoners representing powerful gesture of solidarity with those who continue to face repression. During the meeting, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya also presented the “For Distinguished Work for the Benefit of Belarus” medals to Paul Galles and Oleksii Goncharenko for their leadership in promoting the Belarusian cause and their long-standing commitment to supporting Belarusians. The successful meeting also helped launch the process of establishing new parliamentary groups “For a democratic Belarus” in the parliament of Croatia and in the Senate of Spain.
