BGIPU Information Stand for New and Returning Members

Following the 2015 General Election and coinciding with the swearing-in of Members of Parliament, the BGIPU Secretariat staffed an information stand in the Portcullis House Atrium on 20 May to outlline its work in promoting the UK Parliament’s role in inter-parliamentary affairs, particularly through the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

BGIPU Secretariat Staff were pleased to be able to meet a wide range of new and returning members and their staff to answer questions about our role and planned activities.  The Secretariat also took the opportunity to encourage members to consider nominating for positions on the BGIPU Executive Committee to fill vacancies resulting from the recent election outcome.  Many members also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the contribution made by the outgoing BGIPU Chair, Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP, who is standing down from the post following his appointment as Minister of State for Health in the UK Government.

This key outreach activity, early in the term of the new UK Parliament, also provided a valuable opportunity to promote the important role parliamentarians can play in international relations, particularly through dialogue and exchange with counterparts across the world.  It also allowed the Secretariat to highlight the contribution being made by the IPU, as the global body of national parliaments, in promoting parliamentary perspectives on international issues, including in association with major UN meetings.
