Inter-Parliamentary Union leadership statement on conflict in Middle East

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the global organization of parliaments, was founded on the principles of parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy for peace and democracy.

As such, we condemn the military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States of America on the Islamic Republic of Iran.

We likewise condemn the retaliatory attacks launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran on Israel as well as on other countries in the region including Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

We call for the full respect of national sovereignty, the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

We deplore the loss of life, reportedly in the hundreds, many of whom are civilians.

The escalation of this conflict gravely threatens the peace, security and stability of the region and beyond.

We urge all parties to return to dialogue and resume negotiations, the only sustainable way to resolve their differences.

The IPU stands ready to support all its impacted Member Parliaments to bring about a peaceful solution.

All the people of the Middle East deserve to live in peace and security. Parliamentarians, as representatives of the people, have a role to play to help make this a reality.
