Inter-Parliamentary Union statement on recent worrying developments in Guinea-Bissau
The IPU is following developments in Guinea-Bissau with deep concern after reports that the military has taken power.
The IPU strongly condemns this military coup and urges the armed forces to show maximum restraint.
The IPU reiterates its calls for a swift return to constitutional order which respects the rule of law, the human rights of political opponents and the integrity of democratically elected institutions in Guinea-Bissau.
Any transfer of power must take place through the ballot box, in line with the will of the people expressed in free and fair elections which include all constituent parts of the country. The IPU therefore urges the authorities to take all necessary steps to ensure the peaceful conclusion of the ongoing electoral process and the legitimate outcome, reflecting the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau, to be published as soon as possible.
The IPU calls for all stakeholders to engage in inclusive and meaningful dialogue to find a peaceful outcome that delivers the best results for the people of Guinea-Bissau.
The IPU urges the authorities to release all those detained unlawfully in the context of the current electoral process and to investigate the cases of those who have disappeared.
The IPU stands ready to support all initiatives in the region to restore peace and security in the country.
