BGIPU Video for International Day of Parliamentarism marking end of IPU’s 130th anniversary

On 30 June 2020, the IPU and the parliamentary community will celebrate the third edition of International Day of Parliamentarism and the anniversary of the foundation of the IPU.  BGIPU has released a video marking the occasion.

The IPU was founded 131 years ago on 30 June 1889 by a handful of parliamentarians as the first political multilateral organization in the world, encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations.  Under the umbrella slogan of “130 years of empowering parliamentarians”, the IPU and its Members have celebrated the milestone throughout the past year in a number of different ways around the world.

The date of 30 June 2020 will mark the official end of the IPU’s 130th anniversary. The day will be an opportunity for the IPU and its Member Parliaments to reinforce the message that the world needs its parliaments more than ever before – to put in the place the legislation and the budgets to respond to the health and economic crisis, to protect vulnerable people, to scrutinize government action and to help build back better after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BGIPU had marked the 130th anniversary with inter-parliamentary events with our French counterparts in Paris and a diplomatic reception hosted by the Speaker at the Palace of Westminster in June 2019.  There was also recognition of the occasion at the 141st IPU Assembly in Serbia, Belgrade where the leaders of the UK and French delegations spoke about the history and vision of the creation of the IPU.

Drawing to a close the 130th anniversary on 30 June, as the IPU moves into its 131st year, the world will celebrate the International Day of Parliamentarianism or #WorldParliamentDay.

Marking this occasion, the BGIPU Chair, Harriett Baldwin MP, past Chair Rt Hon Alistair Burt, Executive Committee members, Wayne David MP, Alicia Kearns MP and Chris Law MP and Rt Hon Lord McConnell took the time to record a video of some of their perspectives on the importance of parliamentarianism and democracy.
