IPU celebrates 136 years of inter-parliamentary dialogue in Greece
As part of celebrations taking place around the world, the IPU marked International Day of Parliamentarism and the Organization’s 136th anniversary at a special event in Ancient Olympia, Greece.
Hosted by Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, a member of the Hellenic Parliament and the IPU Executive Committee, the anniversary gathering brought together IPU Executive Committee members, Greek parliamentarians and local dignitaries at the International Olympic Academy. The venue underscored the symbolic connection between multilateralism in sport, the birthplace of democracy, and the ongoing evolution of parliamentary dialogue.
A central theme of the event was gender equality, aligning with the IPU’s 2025 campaign Achieving gender equality, action by action designed to foster gender-sensitive institutions and combat discrimination and gender-based violence.
Participants also took part in a tree-planting ceremony, helping to reforest areas of Ancient Olympia following devasting wildfires, in the newly inaugurated IPU Park of Peace and Democracy.
The celebration was preceded by a meeting of the IPU Executive Committee and followed by discussions with Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, focusing on ways to promote parliamentary diplomacy as a vital complement to traditional diplomatic efforts.
