IPU Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations to focus on the SDGs

Scaling up action for the Sustainable Development Goals: Finance, Institutions, and Politics, will be the theme of the 2025 Parliamentary Hearing, a joint initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

IPU President Tulia Ackson and UNGA President Philemon Yang will host some 300 participants, including parliamentarians, Speakers of Parliament, advisers and experts, from more than 60 countries at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States of America, on 13 and 14 February 2025.

The hearing will take an in-depth look at ways to reboot the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to turbocharge its 17 SDGs, designed to fight poverty, reduce inequality and reset the planet on a more sustainable path.

With only five years left to implement the global goals, the IPU and the UNGA will facilitate exchanges between parliamentarians and experts with a focus on mobilizing political will and engaging all stakeholders, especially parliaments.

The hearing will address critical issues such as the poor knowledge of SDGs at the national level, uneven parliamentary engagement, aid effectiveness, tax reforms, debt crisis and international trade challenges.

Participants will also consider action to close the SDG funding gap in view of the 4th UN International Conference on Financing for Development in June 2025 in Spain.
