IPU pays tribute to former IPU President, Sergio Páez 1933-2025
The IPU regrets to announce that Mr. Sergio Páez, former President of the IPU and a distinguished Chilean parliamentarian, died on 2 July 2025 at the age of 92, after a long illness.
Sergio Páez served as IPU President from 2002 to 2005. During his tenure, he displayed a strong dedication to strengthening parliamentary democracy, fostering dialogue and promoting international cooperation among parliaments.
Under his leadership, the IPU advanced its commitment to human rights, inclusive societies, and the participation of women and youth in parliamentary life. His presidency reflected his deep belief in multilateralism and the vital role of parliaments in building peace and sustainable development.
In Chile, Mr. Sergio Páez was a prominent figure of the Christian Democratic Party. He first served as a parliamentarian in the Chamber of Deputies, representing Llanquihue, Maullín, Calbuco and Puerto Varas from 1969 until the 1973 coup.
In the 16 years that followed, he played a leading role in the long campaign to restore democracy and end human rights abuses in Chile. In 1989, he was elected to the Senate and continued to play an active role in national life and in the promotion of international parliamentary diplomacy, receiving awards in several countries.
The IPU extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, his parliamentary colleagues and the people of the Los Lagos region.
