IPU President leads delegation on human rights mission to Venezuela
An IPU delegation, led by IPU President Duarte Pacheco and comprising parliamentarians from around the world, is in Venezuela this week.
The delegation will hold consultations with a range of stakeholders in a bid to assess the general political situation in the country as well as to find satisfactory solutions to the cases currently being monitored by the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians.
During the five-day mission, the IPU delegation is expected to meet with parliamentarians, government as well as judiciary authorities and representatives from civil society and as many stakeholders as possible. The mission will also meet with leaders of the opposition.
The mission is expected to make recommendations to the IPU’s governing bodies on how the IPU can contribute to the overall efforts to resolve the political crisis in Venezuela, in a sustainable way.
