IPU SG Martin Chungong honoured with Vital Voices Solidarity Award
Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), has received one of this year’s Vital Voices Solidarity Awards, an awards programme that recognizes remarkable male advocates of gender equality.
The award was presented by Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, at a ceremony hosted by fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg on 9 December 2024 in New York.
Mr. Chungong was honoured alongside three other men whose commitment to gender equality is also making a profound impact on the world: actor and entrepreneur Justin Baldoni, activist Erfaan Hussein Babak and entrepreneur Chid Liberty.
Past honourees include US President Joe Biden, skateboarding legend and activist Tony Hawk, actor and activist Patrick Stewart, CEO of the International Rescue Committee David Miliband, and Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres.

Martin Chungong made history in 2014 as the first African and non-European elected as IPU Secretary General. Re-elected for a third term in 2022, he has dedicated his career to promoting democracy, building peace and advancing gender equality.
Mr. Chungong has a notable track record in promoting dialogue and conflict resolution. He has devoted considerable efforts to strengthening parliamentary engagement on sustainable development and accountability.
Prior to his role as Secretary General, he served as the IPU’s Deputy Secretary General and Director of Programmes. Before that, he worked in the Cameroonian Parliament.
Martin Chungong currently spearheads the IPU’s work to dramatically reduce maternal and child mortality rates through effective legislation and ensuring governments follow up on international commitments.
He sits on the Board of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General as one of the global leaders committed to fighting malnutrition through the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. He is a Global Champion of the campaign to fight conflict-related sexual violence.
He also chairs the Global Board of the International Gender Champions network, mobilizing global efforts towards gender equality across international organizations, diplomatic missions and civil society.
