
IPU Statement on death of Kenyan MP Mr. Charles Ong’ondo Were
The IPU condemns in the strongest possible terms the assassination of Mr. Charles Ong’ondo Were, an opposition Kenyan member of parliament on 30 April 2025.
Mr. Were died after being shot by gunmen when his vehicle stopped at a traffic light in Nairobi in what the Kenyan police are describing as a targeted and premediated assassination.
The IPU and global parliamentary community extend their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and constituents.
The IPU calls on the authorities to conduct a swift, thorough and transparent investigation, as ordered by Kenyan President William Ruto, and to bring those responsible to justice.
The IPU stands in solidarity with the Parliament of Kenya and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending parliamentarians and upholding democratic values worldwide.
