IPU statement on military coup in Gabon following disputed election
The IPU condemns the military coup in Gabon and urges the armed forces to show maximum restraint. The health and well-being of the president should be protected.
The IPU calls for a swift return to constitutional order in respect of the rule of law, human rights and democratically elected institutions.
The IPU encourages all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to find the best post-electoral outcome for the people of Gabon, who deserve democracy and sustainable development.
Any transfer of power should happen through the ballot box and not by men in uniform.
