IPU statement on developments in Nepal

The IPU is following with concern the unrest in Nepal, especially the attacks on Parliament.

The IPU and the wider global parliamentary community call for calm and urge an immediate end to the violence, which has led to a tragic loss of lives.

Attacks on public institutions and private property, including the recent targeting of Nepal’s Parliament and its members, are unacceptable and undermine the foundations of democracy.

The right to peaceful protest must be protected but any grievances must be addressed through democratic means and dialogue, not through violence or destruction.

The IPU urges the authorities and protestors to uphold Nepal’s democratic principles, and work towards a peaceful solution that delivers for all of the people.
