Parliamentary Conference on the World Trade Organisation calls for WTO reform
The Inter-Parliamentary Union has concluded its Parliamentary Conference on the World Trade Organization (WTO) which took place at the Senate of Cameroon, on the eve of the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14).
The Parliamentary Conference on the WTO is co-organized by the IPU and the European Parliament. It brings together legislators from all regions to shape ministerial discussions and build consensus on inclusive trade rules.
The Conference adopted a parliamentary outcome document, which was presented to WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala by Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, together with Jörgen Warborn, Member of the European Parliament.
The document calls for comprehensive reform across all core functions of the WTO, including restoring a fully functioning dispute settlement system, strengthening the development dimension among its priorities, and advancing work on digital trade.
It calls on ministers to provide clear political direction and to agree on a credible roadmap for reform beyond MC14.
The document also emphasizes the critical role of parliaments in turning trade decisions into tangible benefits for people and the planet.
