Parliamentary leaders of the world’s biggest economies convene in Brasilia
The Parliament of Brazil, in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), hosted the 10th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit from 7-8 November 2024 in Brasilia, Brazil.
This high-level forum brought together the heads of parliament from the world’s largest economies to address critical global issues.
The P20 is a multilateral platform for parliamentary diplomacy which provides a parliamentary dimension to the G20 process. The Summit was preceded by a Parliamentary Forum which took place on 6 November 2024 in Brasilia and which considered parliamentary action following the recommendations of the inaugural P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians, held in Maceió on 1 and 2 July 2024.
Through the topic Parliaments for a just world and a sustainable planet, the Summit provided an opportunity for the highest level of parliamentary leadership to exchange good practices and to identify initiatives in which parliamentary diplomacy can positively impact the lives of all.
An outcome document was adopted and is expected to be communicated to the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro on 18 and 19 November 2024. The document calls for parliamentary action on the following key topics:
a. Fighting hunger, poverty and inequality worldwide
b. Sustainable development and a just and inclusive ecological transition, including addressing natural and man-made disasters
c. Global governance adapted to the challenges of the 21st century
The Summit builds on the legacy of previous P20 Speakers’ Summits held in India (2023), Indonesia (2022), Italy (2021), Japan (2019) and Argentina (2018).

IPU President, Tulia Ackson, said:
“As parliamentarians, we are uniquely positioned to serve as champions of prevention, mitigation and action. We can translate international commitments into national realities, hold our governments accountable and ensure that budgets, policies and programmes reflect the needs of both our citizens and our planet. Parliaments bridge the global and the local, creating a critical link between people and government. Our role is not limited to national boundaries; parliamentary diplomacy and international cooperation are more important now than ever.”
