President of Uzbekistan honours IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong
In a significant diplomatic gesture, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan presented the distinguished “Dustlik” (Order of Friendship) to Martin Chungong, IPU Secretary General, during the 150th IPU Assembly, held in Tashkent from 5 to 9 April 2025.
The award, which is the highest to be awarded to a foreigner, recognizes Martin Chungong’s exceptional role in deepening cooperation between Uzbekistan and the IPU. President Mirziyoyev highlighted Martin Chungong’s significant contributions to advancing global parliamentary diplomacy, fostering peaceful relations among nations, and supporting Uzbekistan’s development – particularly in areas such as youth empowerment and human rights.
Martin Chungong has served as IPU Secretary General since 2014 and is the first African and non-European to hold the position.
Expressing his gratitude, he said: “I humbly accept the Order of Friendship from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as a recognition of the strong ties and friendship between Uzbekistan and the IPU. This award reflects the IPU’s impact on democracy and development in Uzbekistan and beyond.”
