The world’s young parliamentarians gather in Yerevan

More than 300 young parliamentarians from some 150 countries are expected at the tenth IPU Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians from 12-14 September 2024 in Yerevan, Armenia. The event is being co-organized by the IPU and the National Assembly of Armenia.

The annual IPU Conference serves as a unique global platform for young parliamentarians under 45 to connect, share experiences and support one another.

This year’s theme, Avoiding lost generations: Safeguarding education and employment in all circumstances, focuses on solutions to ensure uninterrupted access to education and create job opportunities for young people.

The Conference will be inaugurated by the Armenian Prime Minister, Mr. Nikol Pashinyan, followed by remarks from IPU President, Ms. Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Alen Simonyan, IPU Secretary General, Mr. Martin Chungong, and the President of the IPU Forum of Young Parliamentarians, Mr. Dan Carden. The President of Armenia, Mr. Vahagn Khachaturyan, will close the Conference.

First held in 2014, the IPU Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians aims to strengthen and rejuvenate democracies by making them more representative of all generations.

The IPU’s Forum of Young Parliamentarians leads the Organization’s work to boost youth participation in parliaments and ensure young MPs play a full role in the work of parliament.

According to the IPU’s latest figures, MPs under 30 make up just 2.94% of parliamentarians worldwide, highlighting a significant representational deficit compared to the estimated half of the world’s population in the same age bracket.  Armenia has a good track record of attracting young people to parliament, consistently topping the IPU’s ranking of MPs under 30 in recent years.

The cross-party UK delegation comprised Dan Carden MP, who is also the President of the IPU’s Forum of Young Parliamentarians and Richard Holden MP, supported by Rhiannon Edwards of the BGIPU Secretariat.
