Tributes paid to Sir David Amess MP by BGIPU Executive Committee colleagues
Meeting on 21 October 2021 in its first physical gathering in the IPU Room for 19 months, the BGIPU Executive Committee, chaired by Harriett Baldwin MP, paused for a minute’s silence to remember the significant contribution of their colleague Sir David Amess MP who was tragically killed in a terrorist attack on 15 October.
The Chair recalled Sir David’s participation in BGIPU delegations and IPU Assemblies dating back to 1996, culminating in him being elected to the Executive Committee in March 2020. The high regard in which Sir David was held and remembered fondly by international counterparts was reflected in condolence messages received by the BGIPU Chair from a wide variety of countries and in other private messages of tribute and remembrance passed to members and Secretariat staff since last Friday.
BGIPU members have been grateful for these messages of support and solidarity from the global inter-parliamentary community, including the IPU President, Duarte Pacheco and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.
