Zambian Vice-President Nalumango visits the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
On 3 June 2025, the Zambian Vice-President, Ms. Mutale Nalumango, made a landmark visit to the House of Parliaments, the IPU’s headquarters. Accompanied by Ambassador Tembo Luambia, Ms. Nalumango’s presence underscored the strong partnership between Zambia and the IPU.
The Zambian Parliament has been a particularly active Member of the IPU, maintaining a 100% rate of attendance at IPU Assemblies since hosting the 134th edition in Lusaka in 2016. Members of the Parliament also play a key role on many IPU committees: Ms. Nelly Mutti, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, is Vice-President of the IPU Executive Committee, representing the African Group; Mr. Harry Kamboni is a member of the IPU’s Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians; and Mr. Oliver Amutike serves on the IPU Committee on Middle East Questions.
With 80% of its population under 35 years old, the National Assembly of Zambia has been actively promoting many youth-related activities, including the IPU’s campaign I Say Yes to Youth in Parliament!, which aims to rejuvenate parliaments and encourage greater youth participation in politics.
Vice-President Nalumango reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment by adding her support to the IPU campaign during this visit. She also emphasized the consultative role played by the Zambian youth caucus within parliament.
Vice-President Nalumango noted that a constitutional amendment process is currently underway in Zambia, aimed at enhancing the participation of young people and women in politics and society.
Despite strong female leadership at the highest political levels, which the IPU salutes, Zambia’s Parliament still faces challenges in gender representation, with women making up only 15% of Members of Parliament. The IPU will continue to support the Parliament to increase the number of women holding parliamentary seats.
